Ok! You know that I went to Mzoli’s in early August when my friend Belinda came to town. When we went, we were just there to wash her friends car. Anyways this past saterday Emily was organising a farewell party for her friend who is visiting from the states. She decided to take her to Mzoli’s. I decided to tag along after debating with myself if I should go, as I have my thesis hanging over my head. I went anyway. I need the break (thats what I told myself).
There were 8 of us and we took 4 cars to Gugulethu a.k.a jujuletwa (French translation). Parking was crazzy but Em quickly got a spot. It was packed, cars and people everywhere. Not just any cars but BMW, Mercs, Audi’s and all types of VW’s. I was told before that this is where black middle class hang out. I never knew it was like this though. There were glamorous people everywhere. People were decked out looking fabulous in their gear, there was loud house music, the smell of braai meat in the air. There were UCT students left right and center. It was almost just like I had imagined it would be. Immediately my body started moving to the music. Ever since I arrived in Cape Town, I have been looking for a place like Mzoli’s to hang out. Now I know where I will take Olwethu my friend from East London when he arrives.
They sell the best meat in the most reasonable prices. We each contributed R20 towards meat and it was in abundance. The spirit in the air is one of Hedonism. Everybody believes they are the shit and they are there to have fun. If you want to see beautiful black men, if you want to see beautiful black women, go to Mzoli’s. There were a number of white people. There was thisother one who actually spoke Xhosa. Amazing I tell you. Around about 7pm Mzoli cuts off the music and it’s time to pack up and go home. That’s when you go to Cape Town and go clubbing. We decided to go to Em’s place and we had green tea to help us digest the meat. It was a fantastic Saturday afternoon.
When I hand in my thesis I know what I am doing for celebrations.
Hi
I live 80 metres from Mzoli’s and i have not been home for three years due to work and studies in Europe.I read with relish anything about the goings on in Gugs and Cape Town to alleviate home sickness.
I am indeed tremendously impressed by Mzoli’s business going from strenght to strengh, above all to attract all people of different hues and social stages. I would like to thank the author for his article on Mzolis’ albeit grudgingly for not including some pictures.
Yours in appreciation
