I sometimes obviously miss home. I miss so many things back home especially when it gets really cold in Minnesota. It’s a clishe’ by you always realize what you have when it is gone. Here are some of the things I miss.
-
I miss going to Pick and Pay and buying boere wors
-
I miss having a glass of St Anna wine
-
I miss the South African sun, when everybody is wearing flip flops and sandals.
-
I miss umphokoqo (African salad) and my mom makes the best in the world.
-
I miss catching a taxi, and everybody gets into a conversation even though they don’t know each other.
-
I miss going to a club and listening to house music from Dj fresh and the rest and then kwaaito towards the end of the evening.
-
I miss hearing people speak Xhosa.
-
I miss watching Isidingo.
-
I miss actually miss the noise from back home. I know people want to shy away from the noise, (I also did when I was back home) I miss it now.
-
I miss to seeing my friends dance, and everybody doing the dance of the moment.
-
I miss South African radio stations: Fresh in the afternoon, Elana Africa, Bad Boy t. (although sometimes they can be so frustrating)
-
I miss home cooked meat.
-
I miss going to YDE, the V&A waterfront, Canal Walk, Cavendish
-
I miss going to the beach (not lake, not river) and wearing something very little.
-
I miss South African women and their conversations.
I live in a beautiful country and I just wish that all South Africans could realise that!
This country misses you too, my darling
